Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya Officially Opens 2012 Western Kenya Branch Show

The 2012 Western Kenya Branch (Kakamega) show was officially opened on Friday 22nd June, 2012. The Chief Guest of the event was the Minister of State for Planning, National Development and Vision 2030, Hon. Wycliff Oparanya. The Minister was taken on a tour of the various stands in the showground by the Society’s Deputy National Chairman Mrs. Rhoda Ahonobadha, the Chief Executive Officer Mr. Batram Muthoka and the Chairman of Kakamega Branch Mr. Elly Mukolwe. Among the stands that he visited included Nzoia Sugar, Kenya Research Foundation, Ministry of Agriculture and livestock among others. During the official opening ceremony the Minister, urged farmers in the region to diversify and embrace horticulture which he said had great potential for Western Kenya. He pointed out that the Kisumu and Eldoret airport should be maximized by farmers in exporting their produce. The Deputy National Chairman, Mrs Rhoda Ahonobadha, in her welcome remarks thanked the minister for gracing the occasion.

The Society’s theme for 2012/13 is; "Enhancing Technology in Agriculture and Industry for Food Security and National Growth". Mrs Ahonobadha said the theme called for concerted efforts to develop sustainable agriculture that will spur industrial growth thus contributing to the overall national growth.

The Deputy Chairman told the show goers and exhibitors that the society will endeavour to continue being a voice of the farmers in addressing issues that affected them. She said that there was need to provide sustainable access to markets along the value chain seeking to integrate producers and markets and to make the agricultural sector more responsive to consumer markets. She said this would facilitate growth and expansion of agri-business and national growth.
